Poly Styrene lead singer of her band X-Ray Spex, turban off back stage after she had performed at the Rock Against Racism concert, Victoria Park, 30th April 1978.

Poly Styrene, born Marianne Joan Elliot-Said, inspired by seeing the Sex Pistols in 1976, formed her band X-Ray specks with her horn player friend Lora Logic (Susan Whitby). At the Rock Against Racism concert, Styrene performed her rousing single ‘Oh Bondage Up Yours!’. Her music was raucous and her gleeful, un-prettified presentational style, on and off stage, added to the way young punk women, like The Silts and The Raincoats, were signalling a ‘feminist’ liberation that would change the public face of female for all time. Being of mixed ethnicity, Styrene was subject to everyday racist insult.
