As teenagers, The Jam started playing after school in their local pub where Joe Strummer saw them and though they were great. They became one of the early punk fan’s favourite bands. However, after the release of their retro-Mod style debut album they were hailed in the press as the Acceptable Face of Punk. Many of us considered this a betrayal. At the time, I wrote: “Although they are talented musicians, they seem to have dug themselves into an unoriginal Who hole out of which it may be difficult for them to climb.”
