Marina Warner in conversation with Patrizia Di Bello, reflecting on the themes of fairy tales and transformation in Jo Spence’s work, and its resonances in contemporary culture.

 

Marina Warner is professor of English and Creative Writing at Birkbeck, University of London. Her many publications include From the Beast to the Blonde: On Fairy Tales and Their Tellers (1994) and Once Upon a Time: A Short History of Fairy Tale (2014) reissued as Fairy Tale: A Very Short Introduction (2018). She worked with Jo Spence on a BBC’s Arena programme on ‘Cinderella’, aired in 1986. 

 

Patrizia Di Bello is professor of History and Theory of Photography at Birkbeck, where she looks after the Jo Spence Memorial Library Archive. Her book on Women’s Albums and Photography in Victorian England (2007) was inspired by Jo Spence’s writings on the family album. She is the author, with Charlene Heath, of ‘The Work Which is Not One’, in Photography and Collaboration, eds Mathilde Bertrand and Karine Chambefort, due out in 2024.
