Panel Discussion with curator Anna Fox and exhibiting artists: Haley MORRIS-Cafiero, Joy Gregory, Trish Morrissey and Maryam Wahid.
On March 22nd Headstrong artists: Haley Morris-Cafiero, Joy Gregory, Trish Morrissey and Maryam Wahid will be taking part in a panel discussion chaired by Director of Fast Forward: Women in Photography, Anna Fox talking about self-portraiture, women photographers and empowerment. The discussion is part of a series of events linked to the Headstrong exhibition at the Centre for British Photography.
Anna Fox comments “Headstrong: Women and Empowerment foregrounds artists and photographers who have been using self-portraiture as a way to crack open the oppressive, often punishing nature of the patriarchal society that we live in. This discussion will ask the artists to consider how and why they work with self-portraiture, whether using it as a tool of empowerment is vital to their practice and as well think about why so many women have decided to work with the self in order to tell stories about their lives.”
The exhibition Headstrong at Centre for British Photography celebrates the work of living photographers based in Britain. It looks at women who have made work that is concerned with how they are represented, what they are dealing with in their everyday lives and what it means to embrace diversities that challenge the conservative order of a patriarchal society. Their work is playful, thought-provoking and often surprising.
