'Half a mile from Hound Tor is Bowerman's Nose, a granite formation said to have been a bowman at the time of the Norman Conquest who - according to which version of the story you hear - fell foul either of the Evil Huntsman or of a coven of witches and was turned to stone. His hounds became Hound Tor, hence the name.'
